In this paper we describe various issues related to design and evaluation of seamless and transparent middleware (i.e. software that mediates between an application program and a network). Design process, field study and results will be introduced.
Internet capable mobile or portable devices are already a
modern commodity while it is becoming all the more
common that such devices are hosts to more than one
wireless interface. The aim of this paper is to show that a
mobile user may make best use of this property by using
multiple wireless interfaces simultaneously. This would
incline that the mobile user can distribute active flows
across the available wireless interfaces and is able to
seamlessly transfer them between the wireless interfaces in
mid-session without interruption. Then, it addresses the
realization of multiple access interface management and
flow mobility with existing protocols, while discussing
shortcomings of each. Finally, it shows the experimental
results that are taken based on one protocol extension,
based on Mobile IP, called Filters for Mobile IP.
Driven by the need for transparent discovery and orchestration of composite services out of elementary services, this paper introduces an innovative approach to Distributed Composite Services Orchestration and Discovery. The proposed concept is based on Variant Configuration theory and Distributed Service Repositories. The authors proceed to describe parts of the specification of a middleware platform based on the proposed concept capable of addressing the need for seamless discovery and composition of distributed services. This study was conducted as part of project NOMAD (IST-2001-33292) and presents the concepts behind the NOMAD Composite Service Configurator and its integration in the Distributed Service Repository.

This paper introduces the novel concept of “Generic Service Elements” (GSEs) in an effort to boost the rapid development of system aware applications and services. The development of highervalue composite services, utilizing a specific form of Variant Configuration, is described. An example how such a method can be applied in the mobile context is given.

This paper describes the added Value of Applications and Services in the Wireless World.
This paper is about a set of wireless communication technologies, namely Mobile IP and Ad-hoc networking that is considered as a key enabler of this environment. It provides detailed scenarios of how these technologies can be used and the technical details of these technologies.

Middleware presents a challenge to those defining user requirements, because there may be many different
kinds of users of the technology, and the technology itself may be invisible for some users while being visible
to others. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a methodology of data collection and analysis to meet the
requirements of end-users who are developing middleware technology for seamless and transparent services.
The context of the study consists of combining two major research methodologies in an iterative manner. As
a result of the study, conducted as a part of the NOMAD project, we will introduce the use trait model for
seamless and transparent mobile services. The main findings of the study also include the possibility of
categorizing reliably user needs based on statistical and qualitative research methods. However, the factors
affecting the reliability and validity of the research must be considered carefully.
This study makes a case for ‘Filters for Mobile IP’, describes its functionality and highlights scenarios where its presence is required.

This paper describes the added Value of Applications and Services in the Wireless World.
In the sections to follow, the advantages of integrated networks are investigated accompanied by an introduction to Mobile IP. The lack of a standardized Ad-hoc networks protocol reduces their investigation into a brief reference to expectations. This study concludes with a presentation of the ComNets experimental Testbed and a view into future relevant research topics that can now be addressed through this experimental implementation.
